Green Lantern ala Neal Adams

If there is any definitive run on GL that competes with Gil Kane, it's Neal Adams. So much so that Adams' interpretation of Hal Jordan as GL almost eclipses the character itself.

If my studies here look a tad wonky, I can't claim any defense. Working from Adams is quite difficult, the level of detail shown in Adams' renderings looks loose and effortless on paper but is assuredly not in reproduction. Adams is one of comics' master draughtsmans, and while a tough exercise any artist would do well from a lesson or two.

Green Lantern ala Gil Kane

GL, and Hal Jordan specifically, pretty much starts and ends with the legendary Gil Kane. There is an energy and dynamism in his work that is rearely matched. Kane of course kicked off the Silver Age with his run on Green Lantern that stands as a monumental tenure to this day.

Working/learning from Kane's art, as sampled here, what amazes me is the simplicity he employed but was able to retain so much energy. I encourage fellow artists to pick up one of the DC Showcase collections and learn a thing or two!

There are many GL's of course, tho Hal Jordan will always be my main man.

So this is the first speedy done in Painter; I'm trying to get a feel for everything as I'd like to start using it more than Photoshop for speedpainting. The tools are pretty overwhelming, but I suppose it's just a matter of finding the brushes that suit you best. Again from reference.

The entire time I was trying to do this painting I kept getting text messages from an unknown number in my hometown:

Unknown: Who is this?
Me: This is stuart whitis. and you may be?

Me: As in jaaaaames??? this is a two way street my friend
